19th and 20th Century Architecture

The 19th century was a crucial turning point in the city of Pilsen architecture. Demolition of the medieval city walls made space for the building of new houses. Representative buildings of the municipal theatre, the Municipal Meeting House and the new museum were built at the outer circuit of the newly established promenade parks. Valuable modern architecture designed by the architects Hanuš Zápal, Václav Neckář and Bohuslav Chvojka enriched the city in the inter-war period

Building of the Study and Research Library

The abolished convent with the church of St. Anne was converted into a building of the philosophical institute in the neo-classicist style by the contractor Š. M. Schell in 1804 -1809.
The premises are used by the Study and Research Library of the Pilsen Region (Bedřich Smetana Street No. 14) nowadays.

The Municipal Meeting House

A Building with two social halls and a restaurant designed by A. Čenský and built in 1901.

Breweries

The famous Brewery Gate dates back to 1892, the lighthouse shaped water tower is from 1888.

The J. K. Tyl Theatre

The building of the Great Theatre designed by a prominent Czech architect A. Balšánek finished in 1902. The sculptural group of Opera and Drama in the front of the building was created by L. Šaloun, the beautiful curtain was painted by a prominent regional painter A. Němejc in 1901.

Sightseeing tours

of the so called Great Theatre (Velké divadlo) – its stage and backstage during the summer holidays – take place each odd year.

Museum of West Bohemia – Main Building

Founded in1878, the Neo-Renaissance building finished in 1898.
