Protected Historic District
The historical centre of Pilsen cannot be passed without noticing. As soon as you enter the Pilsen basin from any direction, you will be safely guided to the centre of the city by the tower of St. Bartholomew Cathedral which – with is height of 102,6 m (336 feet) – is the highest church tower in Bohemia and a unique dominant of the city skyline.
The historic city centre has been a listed municipal protected historic district since 1989. There are also two listed national cultural monuments on its territory: the archdeacon church of St. Bartholomew and the Pilsen Madonna – a sculpture made of arenaceous marl in late 14th century. Valuable historical houses around the square (many of them having stone portals), the Franciscan monastery, the Renaissance city hall, the Great Synagogue or Aleš sgrafitti.
