Five Tips for Summer Trips out of Pilsen

The real summer has come to Pilsen, the holiday period started and everyone is wondering where to go from the hot city streets for a trip into the surroundings of the city. We prepared five tips for summer trips around Pilsen for you. The trips are planned for one day and it is up to you whether you go by car, on foot or by bike.

  • City view from the Krkavec Viewing Tower

The Krkavec Viewing Tower which is located on the hill above the city of Pilsen of the same name, can be easily reached by walking while enjoying beautiful countryside and its hiking trails. Cyclists will appreciate the marked cycling paths in the surroundings of the viewing tower. However, the top of the hill and the viewing tower can be also reached by car. Then, all you must do is to enjoy the view of the city of Pilsen, the Šumava mountains, the Bavarian mountains, Hohenbogen Hill or Brdy and refresh yourself in the bistro. It is open from Tuesday to Friday from 3 pm to 7pm, at weekends from 10 am to 5 pm. 

  • Radyně Castle

The Royal Castle of Radyně was built during the reign of the king Charles IV. on the hill near Starý Plzenec. In addition to visiting the ruins and the highest viewing point in the vicinity of Pilsen, it is also worth to see the rock formations located in the forest below the castle. Well-marked hiking and cycling trails will lead you there. Children will surely be impressed by the legend of the castle founding by the vindictive knight Radouš and the adults can enjoy a wide selection of beers in the nearby microbrewery Radouš.

  • Canoeing on the Berounka River

It is a great idea to spend hot summer days is in the vicinity of a refreshing river. Water sports enthusiasts can rent a canoe and necessary equipment and go canoeing on the Berounka River which is very suitable for this type of activity. Start in Pilsen on the confluence of Mže and Radbuza River and then enjoy canoeing for a few kilometres or just as long as you like it.

  • A walk in the park of the Kozel Chateau

The Kozel Chateau is a classicist hunting chateau with a beautiful park which makes the area an ideal place for walks and with a natural pond located in the park it just invites you to rent a boat. Pilsen is just 15 km away. In addition, the Kozel Chateau hosts cultural events of various character so that it is very easy to make your trip to Kozel even more special. Look at the accompanying cultural programme for the holiday period and enjoy theatre performances, concerts of various genres and interesting exhibitions.

  • Swimming in the Hracholusky Dam

The Hracholusky Dam is only 25 kilometres away from Pilsen and it is a great place for a one-day trip combined with swimming. The area provides facilities for families with children, accommodation in cottages and several campsites. And if you get tired of swimming, on the right bank of the Mže River you can see the ruins of the Buben Castle or take a ride along the dam on the legendary steamboat called Pilsen.
